Vagus Surgicalis
Starting today, “monash medical student” shall be no more the name of my blog. Instead, it shall be called “Vagus Surgicalis“.

Vagus: The term vagus, referring to the tenth cranial nerve which has widespread distributions to the head, neck, thorax and abdomen, is a Latin word meaning “wandering”. The English words vague and vagrant are derived from the same source.
Surgicalis: The term surgicalis is a Latin variant of the word surgical. The accurate Latin term for surgery is chirurgia. But that’s too difficult to remember.
Special significance for me:
- Vagus. it takes effort to remember all the branches of CN X and what type of fibres they are. They are also many ‘branches’ in medicine to pursue and each will entail a different type of professional development and personal life. As i “wander” about in the infant stages of my medical career, i realise there will be lots of hard work and sacrifice involved.
- Surgicalis indicates my current aspiration and dream to be a surgeon. I might not become one, but i must dare to dream.
“To accomplish great things
we must not only act,
but also dream
not only plan
but also believe.”
-Anatole

Ah.. the proverbial counting your chickens before they hatch…
You do realise if you plan to train as an Oz surgeon that:-
1. the priority of placing you, an international student -, into in-demand vocations, in spite of qualifications, is very low
2. there’s a really long road ahead of you
..had better start sharpening your brown-nosing skills now.
…and no, the School Professors, at this stage, are mainly useless to your ambitions.
Cheers.
Congrats on the new name!
