Top 10 “to-dos” before graduating from med school
Written with a slant toward surgery, based on my current standing (3rd year cleared! )
- Get through Paeds, O&G, Psych (urgh) and GP rotations next year.
- Do a B.Med.Sci in Surgery. (at Monash, it costs AUD42,300 for international students, as of 2008. locals do it for <AUD8,000)
- Go to a third world country for an elective.
- Go to a first world country for an elective.
- Learn to be a useful surgical assistant. (reading is the first step; doing is next)
- Scrub in to assist Dr Bongi, Dr Ramona Bates and Dr Jeffrey Parks for any operation. and ?Meet Sidney Schwab.
- Tour several states in countries mentioned in #3 and #4.
- Have a reasonable working knowledge of internal medicine and intensive care medicine.
- Rotated through a trauma surgery or emergency medicine clerkship in Year 5.
- Done a rural rotation in Australia (gen med or surg)

I’m flattered, Jeffrey, to be included here. I too would like to scrub with Bongi or Buckeye.
u guys can choose the subj for internship???….thats weird..we dont have such options here
these ’subjects’ – i think you mean the disciplinary rotations – are part of our course. Year 4 is made up of those 4 rotations i mentioned in the 1st to-do.
Year 5 is made up of other rotations which i’ve yet to get to. (step by step is my motto)
as for internship, i surely have no idea yet. perhaps you could ask Synapse.

oh ok..got it..means u have rotational postings on major subj??…med, surg and all
here in final yr we have med, surg, obg ,ortho and paeds….
Can you explain #2? I did not get it.
Please keep us posted on # 3 and # 4. I will be very interested in reading about those. I am planning on doing electives here and there too (somewhere in the Middle East then in the US) but I am not sure how I will go about it. Step by step guides will be awesome.
