ANZAC weekend camping trip!

“Lest we forget.”

All over the world, these 3 words are engraved in many memorial stones or monuments set up to remember the brave soldiers of ANZAC. Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand. Thanks to the importance of these folks, we have a public holiday and as students, we gladly welcomed it. 3 of us decided to drive out to the country and do a little camping and hiking.

We conquered Cathedral Range National Park and Lake Eildon National Park in rural Victoria. It was scenic and refreshing…

We were on top of the tallest peak at Cathedral Range National Park. It is called The Cathedral. We got off the edge and tried to pose as rock climbers hanging off the cliff. Then apparently i faced some trouble getting up. So Elliot had to give me a hand.

The view from the top was amazing:

I thought the view from the top was amazing, again. The hard climb was worth it:

Overall i thought it was a great trip. We got to know each other better, had a good tour of the awesome works of wonder in Mother Nature in rural Victoria, had a tour of the Yarra Valley and some wineries, some wine tasting, etc etc. All thanks to ANZAC Day. Here’s to the valiant.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.
The “Ode of Remembrance” is an ode taken from Laurence Binyon’s “For the Fallen“, which was first published in The Times in September 1914. Binyon wrote it while sitting on The Rumps in Cornwall.
