Easter Break

22 03 2008

Thankfully, we have a one-week Easter break that begun yesterday on Easter Friday, stretching over the weekend, till the following Monday. This is our last mid-semester break for year 3.

Easter Friday service at my church Ebenezer BPC was fantastic. We had a praise service where items of worship and praise were rendered. There was the choir, solo and duet items of favourite hymns and even a ensemble of sorts consisting of violins, flutes and the organ. The lyrics of the old hymns like “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Because He Lives” were edifying and refreshing.

I’m taking time out today (Saturday) to catch up on some work. Been rotated through the main surgical disciplines at the teaching hospital i’m allocated for this semester. I haven’t got much chance to scrub in for procedures but hopefully that will change in time to come. Stick around long enough and ask when the opportunity arises. That’s what i’m going by. We have an amazing colorectal fellow as a tutor and he was all nice, giving us great mnemonics like INVITED DAMP in an approach to differential diagnoses and pet phrases like “If it looks like a clover, it’s over; if it looks like a dahlia, it’s a failure.” Bonus points to those who can decipher INVITED DAMP and what the pet phrase is with regards to.

Come Tuesday to Friday, i’ll be heading out to the Grampians at Halls Gap for an Easter Camp with Bethel BPC. The camp speaker will be Rev (Dr) Quek Suan Yew from my home church in Singapore, Calvary Pandan BPC. Camp theme: Growing in love. Because the programme is not entirely filled, afternoons are free for all and Elliott and I intend to have a tour around the touristy scenic areas of Grampians.

Now is this awesome or what?

INVITED DAMP is a mnemonic to help classify the various differentials for a medical/surgical presentation:
Inflammation/infection.
Neoplasm.
Vascular.
Idiopathic/iatrogenic.
Trauma.
Endocrine
Drugs

Developmental, i.e. congenital
Autoimmune
Metabolic
Psychogenic

In that order!

The phrase is with reference to post-haemorroidectomy outcomes.
