Mental preparation for days to come

2007 December 4

I was browsing the StudentDoctor forums and caught sight of this and thought it might be good to share with some of my classmates who have been newly promoted to year 3. Yay! I don’t think i’m going to dedicate one post to this yet.

Below are the average length of the common general surgeries, according to FliteSurgn, an attending.

Open hernia 45 (20-60) minutes
Lap hernia 45 (15-60)
Lap chole 45 (10-120)
colon resection 90 (30-120)
mastesctomy 45 (30-60)
Lap Nissen 90 (30-120)
Appendectomy 30 (20-60)
Lap appy 30 (10-60)

Esophagectomy: 3-5 hours
Total proctocolectomy with ileoanal pouch: 3-4 hours
Abdominal aortic aneurysm: 3-6 hours
Hepatic lobectomy: 3-6 hours
Whipple (pancreaticoduodenectomy): 3-6 hours

oh yea. psyched! any tips, and prep material? other than the one from bongi.

“seriously, jeff, i actually went the other way. i stopped eating breakfast and conditioned myself to not pass out even on an empty stomach. that way, if i missed a meal, which does happen quite a lot, it would pose no problem. “

Swoon” was a great article by bongi, btw.

Here’s a tip from a medical videographer: limonade. Water and sugar can keep you going for a long time.

Get some strong limonade every hour or so. If you’re assisting, get one of the nurses to get some for you with a straw.

No shame in staying hydrated and keeping the blood sugar levels up ;)
