Exercise

18 05 2006

I took a run around campus today! 3 rounds in 41min! yea! such a long time since i did such runs alone. exercise has been tennis or badminton, which don’t really make you sweat or pant. But those 2 provide fun and laughter, and some entertainment.. Running provides pain. Push! i tell myself, if not its just a little waste of time.

Much has been said about the positive benefits of exercise: boosts your immune system (antibody response & natural killer T cell response), mental wellness, etc…

Some people have also said moderate amounts of exercise is good:

“Twenty to 30 minutes of brisk walking five days per week is an ideal training program for maintaining a healthy immune response.”

Source: “Diet, Exercise, Stress, and the Immune System”, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

What is “moderate”? Isn’t that relative? Isn’t moderate to an ironman trialthete a 20 km easy run? Isn’t that over-exertion to a frail old lady who has just recovered from CVD?

IMHO, such recommendations of exercise amounts has to be specifically tapered to various people who have various levels of fitness to begin with. If we are just talking about MAINTAINING a healthy lifestyle, then i think 30 min a day, with your heart beat at 70-80% of VO2 max would be good. I would say so. I don’t think we should underestimate the abilities of such a wonderous body God has given us. It can do many things that you never thought you could do. Such things, even some medical practititioners can’t provide a complete explanation as to why. But feats do happen.

Willpower.
